Introduction
A content delivery network (CDN) is no longer optional for most production websites — it determines how fast your pages load around the world and how resilient you are to attacks. Cloudflare and Fastly are two of the most prominent CDN providers, and they represent two different philosophies.
Cloudflare is the approachable, all-in-one platform: a huge global network, generous free tier, and security features rolled into a single product. Fastly is the performance-and-control specialist: instant purging, real-time configuration and powerful edge compute, at a price that reflects its depth.
Background
Cloudflare launched in 2009 and built a reputation around a large anycast network and a free tier that brought CDN and security to millions of sites. It has since expanded into DDoS protection, a Web Application Firewall (WAF), bot management and edge compute (Workers).
Fastly, founded in 2011, focused on performance and developer control. Its defining feature was instant cache purging and real-time configuration, and it pioneered edge compute with its Compute@Edge platform, now built on the open-source Varnish and WASM runtimes.
Edge performance
Both networks perform well, but Cloudflare’s larger footprint means more users are served close to an edge node, which reduces latency for geographically distributed audiences. For a site with users spread across many regions, Cloudflare’s reach is a real advantage.
For dynamic, API-heavy workloads, Fastly’s edge compute and caching controls can deliver lower time-to-first-byte in specific scenarios, especially where you need fine-grained control over cache behaviour and response generation.
Configuration and purging
This is where Fastly shines. Its purge API and real-time configuration mean you can remove or update content across the entire network instantly, and roll out configuration changes without waiting for propagation. For teams publishing frequently — say, an e-commerce site that changes prices or inventory constantly — this matters.
Cloudflare can also do this, but some purging capabilities are limited by plan, and configuration changes can take time to propagate to all edge nodes. For many sites, that is a non-issue; for teams that live and breathe cache control, it is a meaningful difference.
Edge compute
Both offer edge compute, but in different flavours. Cloudflare’s Workers are easy to use and integrate cleanly with its platform, though the free tier imposes limits. Fastly’s Compute@Edge (VCL and WASM) is more powerful and flexible, with a steeper learning curve and better fit for complex, customised logic at the edge.
Security
Cloudflare is the more complete security platform out of the box: built-in DDoS protection, a capable WAF, bot management and SSL/TLS. Fastly has strong security features too, but many are add-ons or require more configuration to match Cloudflare’s turnkey experience.
Pricing
Cloudflare is dramatically more accessible. Its free tier covers the majority of websites, and its paid plans scale smoothly for most small and medium sites. Fastly uses usage-based pricing that is more expensive to start and can grow quickly with traffic, though it offers predictable enterprise contracts.
Verdict
Choose Cloudflare for most teams and websites. It offers a large global network, generous free tier, strong built-in security and the easiest path from zero to a fast, secure site.
Choose Fastly when you need instant purging, real-time edge configuration, or heavy edge compute, and when the value of those capabilities justifies the higher cost.
Our recommendation: start with Cloudflare, measure, and migrate to Fastly only if you hit specific limitations that Cloudflare cannot meet.
